My car will not start. Is it the battery or alternator?
But those signs do not prove the battery is the only issue. Cold Central PA mornings can slow starting by themselves, and a no-start can also involve the starter, wiring, a parasitic draw, or the charging system. That is why the first step is not “just put a battery in it.” It is: test the battery and the charging system before buying parts.
What points more toward a dead battery
Helpful clues to write down:
- Did it crank slowly, or not crank at all?
- Did the dash lights dim heavily when you tried to start it?
- Has it needed more than one jump recently?
- Is there visible corrosion around the battery terminals?
- Did the problem happen after the car sat for a while?
Weather matters, too. AAA notes that cold weather can cause slow or failed starting, so a cold-weather no-start alone does not prove the battery has failed (AAA). Late-summer heat around Grantville and Hershey can also be hard on batteries, so testing is still the cleanest way to separate a weak battery from another electrical issue.
What points more toward a bad alternator
So if your car starts with a jump, runs briefly, and then dies again, that pattern points more toward a charging problem than a one-time dead battery. AAA describes a start-after-jump-then-stall situation as a classic sign that the alternator may not be recharging the battery (AAA).
That does not mean the alternator is proven bad from the driver’s seat. It does mean you should not treat the jump-start as the end of the problem. AAA advises going directly for charging-system inspection after a jump instead of assuming the battery concern is solved (AAA). A suspected alternator problem can leave the vehicle stalled or stranded, so continuing a normal trip is not recommended.
Do not forget the starter, wiring, and parasitic draw
One useful distinction: AAA notes that a single click when turning the key, especially when the dashboard lights are still bright, often points away from the battery and toward the starter motor (AAA).
Other causes can include:
- Loose or damaged wiring
- Poor battery connections
- A parasitic draw that drains the battery while parked
- Lighting or accessory faults
- Charging system control issues
This is where a charging system test and electrical diagnostics matter. The goal is to find whether the battery is weak, the alternator is not charging correctly, the starter is not engaging, or something else is draining or interrupting power.
When not to jump-start or keep driving
For I-81, I-78, the PA Turnpike, or a narrow shoulder near Hershey-area traffic, do not turn a no-start into a roadside hazard. If the spot is unsafe, stay away from traffic and call for help.
Stop driving and seek help if the vehicle stalls again, warning lights return, you smell electrical burning, see smoke, or the vehicle feels unsafe. If it is running normally after a jump, the practical move is to drive directly to a place where it can be tested, not to add errands and hope it restarts later.
