Safety tips for handling a breakdown on I-81 between Exits 77-85, and what to do once you're off the highway.

Car on shoulder of I-81 near Grantville

Get off the road if you can

If the car is still drivable, take the nearest exit. Exit 80 puts you right near our shop. Exit 77 is mostly truck stops and big rig repair—not ideal for passenger vehicles. If you can't move, pull as far onto the shoulder as possible, turn your wheels away from traffic, and turn on your hazards immediately.

Stay visible and stay safe

If you have to stop on the shoulder, exit from the passenger side if possible. Stay behind the guardrail. At night, use your phone flashlight or set out reflective triangles if you have them. I-81 moves fast—visibility is critical.

Call for help

If you have roadside assistance through your insurance or AAA, call them. If you don't have coverage, here are two affordable local options that service this stretch of I-81:

For non-emergency breakdowns, Pennsylvania State Police can also assist with traffic safety while you wait.
